Working on the Micron Project in Boise? What to Know About Living and Buying a Home in the Treasure Valley

If you're coming to Boise, Idaho, to work on the Micron project, you may be spending a lot of time thinking about work, schedules, housing, and how long you'll be in the Treasure Valley.

With Micron's major expansion in Boise continuing to move forward, more workers, contractors, technicians, engineers, and other professionals are spending time in the area. Micron says its Idaho expansion is expected to create more than 17,000 new jobs, with DRAM production from the first Idaho fab scheduled to begin in 2027.

If you're going to be in the area for an extended period, one question is worth asking:

Does buying a home make more sense than continuing to rent?

It won't be the right answer for everyone. Your timeline, budget, financing, plans for Idaho, and future housing needs all matter.

But if you're going to be here for several months or longer, it's worth comparing your options.

Why Boise and the Treasure Valley?

The Boise area offers much more than just a place to work.

The Treasure Valley includes communities such as Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Nampa, Kuna, Star, Caldwell and Middleton, giving buyers a wide range of locations and housing options to consider.

Depending on where you work and what type of lifestyle you want, you may prefer being closer to downtown Boise, living in the growing communities west of Boise, or having more space farther out in the Treasure Valley.

Boise

Boise offers an urban lifestyle while still providing easy access to outdoor recreation. Downtown Boise has restaurants, coffee shops, entertainment, parks and the Boise Greenbelt.

Meridian

Meridian is one of the area's most popular communities for people looking for newer neighborhoods, shopping, restaurants and convenient access to the rest of the Treasure Valley.

Eagle

Eagle offers a quieter, more residential atmosphere while remaining close to Boise and Meridian. It's popular with buyers looking for larger homes, established neighborhoods and more space.

Nampa & Caldwell

For buyers looking for potentially more affordable housing options or additional space, Nampa and Caldwell can be worth exploring. Both communities have continued to grow as the Treasure Valley expands.

Kuna, Star & Middleton

If you prefer a smaller-community feel, areas such as Kuna, Star and Middleton can offer another option while still keeping you within the greater Treasure Valley.

Buying While Working on the Micron Project

One of the biggest questions I hear from people relocating or temporarily working in Idaho is:

"Is it even worth buying if I'm not sure how long I'll be here?"

That's where the numbers matter.

Instead of automatically assuming renting is the better option, we can compare:

Micron's expansion is one of several major developments contributing to continued investment and construction in the Boise area.

The City of Boise has specifically identified Micron's expansion as a major commercial development that will affect construction activity and development in the area.

Micron has also recently opened a 60,000-square-foot training center in Boise, designed to support semiconductor workforce development, technical training and apprenticeship pathways.

In August 2026, Micron also announced Micron Research Labs, a planned Boise-based research hub backed by a planned $10 billion investment over the next decade.

That means the story around Boise isn't simply about one construction project. There is a larger technology, manufacturing and workforce ecosystem developing around the region.

Is Buying a Home Right for You?

If you're working on the Micron project, the right decision depends on your individual situation.

You may be better off renting.

You may find that buying makes more financial sense.

You may want to purchase a home now and keep it as a rental later.
